Reshaping a nose requires skills and knowledge. But even if you have the best cosmetic surgeon in town, the possibility of acquiring post-surgical complication can never be eliminated. It is therefore necessary to be acquainted with such problems and know how to avoid them. The following are the most common complications following rhinoplasty:
1. Undesired anesthetic reaction
Local anesthesia is used during a nose job to numb the area to be operated. General anesthesia is used to put the client into sleep for the whole duration of the procedure. However anesthesia has some side effects that must be addressed accordingly. One fatal complication is atelectasis or lung collapse. To prevent this, you should do breathing exercises after the surgery. This is done by inhaling deeply through the nose, holding your breath for one second, and exhaling through the mouth with your lips in ‘o’ form.
2. Infection
Nosocomial infection is the most common type of infection following a surgery. This is acquired within the hospital premise and is due to poor sanitation and infection control of the surgical complex. Infection can also be obtained during the phase of recovery. If constantly exposed to extreme heat, dirt and contaminated belongings, surgical wounds can be infected by staphylococcus bacteria. This type of bacteria is the most frequent to cause infection as they thrive easily on fresh wounds. Infection can be avoided by constant hand-washing and refraining from touching the nose. Taking vitamin C supplement to boost your immune system, and proper hygiene are also helpful practices.
3. Recurrent nosebleeds
Recurrent nosebleeds may lead to massive blood loss and fluid imbalance. This happens when the reconstructed nose is exposed to stress or force such as blowing of the nose and constant sneezing. The nasal mucus is very susceptible to disruption and bleeding especially after a nose job. Recurrent nosebleeds may also occur due to an underlying blood disorder that is not assessed prior to surgery. To prevent this, declare any blood problems and drug medications taken prior to surgery. Avoid exposure to any allergens that may cause you to sneeze or blow your nose.
4. Scarring
Scarring is just a normal phase of wound healing. However, there are certain nose jobs that produce bad scarring. This is evidenced by a significant protrusion of skin over the operated part. Bad scarring results from a surgery done by non-professional surgeon. Although there are ways to treat the scar, scarring should not be deemed lightly. To avoid bad scarring, make sure that you are in the hands of a licensed cosmetic surgeon.
5. Nasal tissue necrosis
This is a rare complication but can possibly happen especially when you immediately resume smoking after rhinoplasty. Diabetic clients are also susceptible to this condition. Preventive measure for nasal tissue necrosis include abstinence from smoking for a period of six weeks after surgery and seeking medical reassessment for wound healing.
Adverse reaction from a medication can also result to complication. Any prescribed medication after the surgery should be taken religiously and should not be terminated or replaced by other types of drugs without.
